I’m an abstract painter. I work in acrylics, graphite and oil pastels. I explore the dynamics of color, shape, and line as my brush pushes and pulls layers of paint in endless combinations creating a visual and internal dialogue that informs and inspires each painting. With a variety of unconventional surface scraping tools I create texture and depth. Additional textures are created using collage techniques that are attached to the substrate and then painted over. The unpredictability of the process results in a freedom of imagination and experimentation as multiple layers build. Over the course of days, weeks, months, and sometimes, years, each painting evolves into a wholly original and expressive work where impressions overshadow reality. I love the challenge that each painting presents. Working with abstraction can at times be frustrating. With no recognizable image or subject to rely on, strong composition and design has must carry the work. I use shape, value contrast, texture and line and color as the main design elements. Often the work does evoke something connected to real world images but not always. I am influenced by the inherent abstract features of landscape, nature and topography
