Biography
Prior to 2016, before I exclusively committed to my fine art practice, my 9th pop-up book, was published. Published works include the bestsellers Christmas in New York, In The Beginning: The Art of Genesis, and Great American Houses and Gardens. My designs are in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian's Cooper Hewitt Museum and The Museum of American History. Chosen as a Visiting Artist at The American Academy in Rome, and Director's Guest at Civitella Rainieri Foundation, I am also an Attingham Scholar.
Artist Statement
Textured abstractions encompassing a broad spectrum of color and materials exhibit the multiplicity and goal-oriented motion of my work. Through the repetitive use of independent abstract forms, I spontaneously fuse disparate elements together in an expressive counterpoint. Using a musical term as metaphor, my work is polyphonic, as I simultaneously combine a number of textured parts, background, middle ground, and foreground; each forming an individual statement while harmonizing with each other.
Possessed with a strong belief in the Bauhaus movement to create works of art in which all the arts, including architecture and design, exist on equal footing, I work in series, using copper and aluminum as the foundation materials for both my mixed media paintings and sculptural assemblages. As I create, a reflective conversation, both literal and emotional, takes place with each piece. Often breaking the boundaries of a rectilinear art practice, I use the inherent motion encompassed in geometric shapes to act as the portal to unexpected dialogue and interpretation. I trust, intuition, chance, and the materials at hand to resolve the use of the perfect geometric shape with imperfect, abstracted elements to create works of truth and harmony.
